My baby smiles at me as she unfolds her diaper

4-months old…

Several weeks ago, Penelope started grasping objects with intent. My favorite was when she actually reached out and pulled my hand to her abdomen as she sat on my lap facing outwards. She, inadvertently or not, made (not forced!) me hug her! Shortly after that, I started putting her clean, unfolded diapers directly in front of her face. I point to the picture of Winnie the Pooh (on the diaper) and repeatedly say, “Look, Pooh!”, “Pooh”, “Pooh”. She looks around, focuses in, and coos.

About a week or two ago, she started actually holding the diaper by herself. Of course, that only lasted for a few seconds before she dropped it or threw it away. This morning she held onto it immediately and it stayed in front of her for almost a minute while she examined it closely. I said “Pooh” and she looked down to the picture!

She also made a step forward with her binkie last week. She no longer just shoves her fingers into her mouth WITH the binkie and then pulls out both hand and binkie — which makes an unhappy baby. I’ve seen her twice put the binkie BACK INTO HER MOUTH!

P’s vocalizations have been more and more speech-like with lots of inflection and pauses. If I speak over her she sometimes seems mildly perturbed. If I wait for the pauses and talk then she looks pleased and smiles. The sad part, if it is sad at all, is that the coo-ing has mostly ended and she’s sounding like a baby. It’s happening so fast!

Plus, she’s pushed out two teeth already. One just a day before she hit four months and the other four days later.

Penelope amazes me every day. I often have to remind myself that I’m her father and have the right to just take her back from whoever is holding her. I don’t have to sit back and watch and wonder when my turn will be. And that, too, is a good feeling. She reminds me that I’m Daddy with her smile, her frown, and that VOICE!
